Part of an ongoing series of bird portraits inspired by people I know, personalities I love or the nature of people and mannerisms I observe. One of my goals beyond documenting birds in my own style to bring attention to nature, the wild species of this world and the importance of their habitats, but also draw out similarities in comparisons to humans. Bringing the two closer together.

Each portrait in this series take 1 to 3 months to complete. The line styles and patterns change based on not only the genetics of the bird, but there personality I’m also trying to capture. Non are technical drawings per se, but feel close to nature. If you study close you will find some purposeful differences, especially in the eyes.

There are many types of Toucans. This portrait is based on the Keel-billed toucan. Darlene was my Mom’s best friend. They spent a lot of time together and was there for her in challenging times as well as times of celebration. It is the national bird of Belize. The species is found in tropical jungles from southern Mexico to Colombia. It is an omnivorous forest bird that feeds on fruits, seeds, insects, invertebrates, lizards, snakes, and small birds and their eggs.

Like many toucans, keel-billed toucans are very social birds, rarely seen alone. They fly in small flocks of approximately six to twelve individuals through lowland rainforests. Their flight is slow and undulating, consisting of rapid wing beats (six to ten), then a glide with the bird's beak extending forward and dipping downward as though pulling the rest of the bird. Their feet are drawn up forward in flight. The flight distances are typically short. They live together in groups, often sharing cramped living quarters of holes in trees. There is a family structure within the group. Birds often "duel" with each other using their bills, and throw fruit into each other's mouths. They 'play ball', one throwing a fruit in the air and a second seizing it.
