Ballpoint pen drawings are difficult to stay clean of “gooping up” on an image this size. In the images shown, pages of paper were used to clean the tip every few minutes of drawing. This drawing was worked on over the course of 3 months.
Pine warblers are hard to find for most of us. They forage and nest up hight an only average a small 5.1 - 5.5 inches in length. With this ink drawing, my goal was to bring the viewer a sense of the bird’s structure, details and patterns. Allowing the viewer to imagine it’s true size in comparison to the scale of the drawing gives a sense of the effort put into every line of detail. Contrasting the birds actual color to the blue ink gives us a sense of artist expression and idea of a subject instead allowing the viewer to see the hand made quality of an image. Photorealism has it’s place in art history, but I want to start a dialogue about what we see in nature and an artists interpretation in an attempt to communicate ideas. Pine warblers are in abundance. Even through pine Forrest are being cut down or removed due to human consumption and growth, the pine warbler can adapt to new groves being planted elsewhere. Like many birds across the globe, those habitats are shrinking.
